The World 500,000,000 Years Ago

The Late Cambrian
500 Million years ago, the time of the Petrified Sea Gardens' stromatolites, North America was much farther south and was twisted almost 90 degrees from where it is today.
The land that is now New England was near the South Pole. New York State was in the Southern hemisphere, in the tropics, and was at the shore of an ancient sea.
This was long before any animals inhabited the land. It's unlikely that plants existed on the land at this time.
Hundreds of millions of years after this period in time, all the world's landmasses joined to form the supercontinent that scientists call Pangea
.
